Sailor Circus
History
1949
The Sailor Circus was founded as
part of the Sarasota High School
gymnastics program.
1952
Due to increasing popularity and audience
attendance, Sailor Circus moved to Sarasota High School’s football field,
erected center poles, and added aerial acts performing
in open air.
Warner Bros.
Pictures filmed a 30-minute short subject in color, which was shown in
movie theaters throughout the
country. This began the national and
international fame of the Sailor Circus.
1964
Three high school performers
appeared as guests of the "Ted Mack’s Amateur
Hour." Performer Donna
Meyers became the youngest girl in the world to complete the double
summersault on the flying trapeze.
1967
Five circus acts are featured on "The Mike
Douglas Show."
1973
Sailor Circus traveled to Fairbanks, Alaska, for a six-week performance
tour.
1976 Sailor Circus appeared on the
"Today" show with Barbara Walters, in
addition to performing in the Macy’s
Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York.
1981
Construction of a new permanent facility is complete. This facility
allowed an
expansion to the four-ring circus we have today, enabling
year-round practice, rain or shine.
1985
Sailor Circus spent 43 days performing at Mitsui Greenland Park near
Fufuoka, Japan.
1992
Sailor Circus performed in Lima, Peru for five weeks.
1999
Sailor Circus celebrated its 50th anniversary!!!
2004
Sailor Circus no longer a
subsidiary of the Sarasota County School Board,
taken over by the Police
Athletic League of Sarasota County, Inc., becoming PAL’s
largest after
school program.
2006
PAL Sailor Circus launches a capital campaign to raise funds for a
complete
renovation of their arena and facilities. |
